On the 24th March Laura headed off for a weeks intense training camp in Mallorca with the University of Birmingham’s triathlon team. It was great to get a solid weeks training in ahead of the start of her season this year. Laura racked up around 35hours of quality training in the sunshine which was brilliant. The Liv bike was awesome and made riding around the famous climbs in Mallorca even more enjoyable!
Sunday 9 April saw Laura competed in the Standard Distance Duathlon AG British Championships and took home a gold medal. It was a tough race but a great result for her first standard distance duathlon! It has given her a great boost for the upcoming triathlon season and is totally fired up for BUCS Sprint Triathlon in a few weeks.

This has to be the bargain of the year so far. A full SL frame with 22spd Ultegra groupset running on super light Giant P-SL rims.
OK so it may be an ‘old’ model but this bike has had a full rebuild (as it was an ex-demo bike) with a new frame and weighing in at a smidge over 7kg is a must for any ambitious racer or sportive rider.
Original rrp for this machine was £3k when new in 2014, and its on offer at £1299.00 so needs to find a new home and a rider to cherish it. This bike will give its new rider many many years of top end pro performance allowing you (if you have the skills obvs) to smash those Strava QoM’s with ease.

So as my new TCR came equipped with ‘tubeless’ tires I thought I better gen up on them and get a better understanding of how this works.
The official line is as: Less rolling resistance and a supple feel, Giant’s tubeless ready Gavia SLR tires reduce your risk of punctures and provide an instance performance boost on the road. Corner faster, improve comfort and increase efficiency to ride further and faster. Gavia SLR features superlight high thread count (170TPI) casing with a centre line wear indicator. A silica based centre compound combined with a softer Giant proprietary compound on the sides allows the tire to conform to the road surface resulting in improved traction under fast cornering and heavy braking. Folding Kevlar bead makes for practical storage and transport, weighing in at just 255g. It’s time to experience tubeless.
And I guess all the above is true. What I have found on the first number of rides is how smooth the rolling of the Gavia SL is. Not withholding that the SL tire is only 70tpi it does perform very well – to a degree. If I was racing however then I would be upgrading to a better tpi rated tire and maybe I will once the roads start to melt in our British summer…
A lot of customers do get squeamish about the tubeless system and may be scared off by its process. But given that the rims are fitted at the factory and our mechanics put the latex liquid into the tire prior to the customers collection of the bike, what is there to worry about? If you get a puncture the latex liquid seals the puncture almost instantly without any negative handling to the bike. Something that I haven’t encountered yet…..
Another point of note, again a question from every rider is, “can I fit a standard inner tube/tire combo ?” and the simple answer is yes you can, so again you can fit your fav tire to these rims.
One last but everso important point is the care of the carbon rims, obviously Giant want the system to work perfectly for you so here is a little guide to longevity of the carbon rims..

A fab day of testing the Giant E-Bike range and even the mud couldn’t hold these bad boys back. So the scene was set, an hours briefing of what these machines could do.. very highly specced with 80nm from the impressive 250w Yamaha motor gives the rider an assisted speed of upto 16mph, and with 3 power modes to choose from, its just what you need to get yourself out of a ploughed field !!! So after re-setting your riding brain this tech allows you to choose a lower gearing and then the motor will deliver the best amount of assisted power to help you along, great for tough trail climbs and gives you a greater confidence to ride more. With upto 5 hours of riding charge from the 500w battery pack if you are sensible with the power modes, you can ride all day with a grin as wide as a Cheshire Cat’s. Oh, then comes the need to wash the bike…. over to you Giant!!!!

So this is my steed for the year… Giant TCR Advanced Pro 2. At my age and being an old road and track racer, I thought I should ride a nice comfortable bike like the Defy.. but the old racer in me still wants to be low and (fast)… so I chose the ultimate in race ready machine. I have to say that I was totally blown away by this bike…speed, elegance and to a degree comfort. It comes equipped with the Carbon SL climbing wheel set shod with tubeless tyres..more about these later, and boy does it fly even with my fitness level at the moment. Rest of the bike is 11speed Shimano 105 – good enough for me and finishing kit is al Giant Connect SL so super light. Speaking of light…this beauty weighs in at a smidge over 7kg !!!!! WOW. So I will post more about live with this machine as the summer unfolds.
